The newborn baby at first and for some months, usually sleep in a bassinet, cot, crib or a co sleeper. The bassinet should be located in the parents’ room as a safety measure while a co sleeper is placed right on the bed or beside the bed as it facilitates feeding during the night. From the third or fourth month, the baby will go to the crib.

Fresh out of the belly of the mother, babies are used to being in the little place to be all tight and that is why they prefer to sleep in small spaces and a co sleeper is the best thing you can bring for your baby.

A bassinet is the generic name used to call the place where the newborn will sleep. It can be wicker if it is so to be fixed that it does not have splinters, it can be type cot, or of varied models. The important thing is that it is safe and stable. It can be of medium size, neither too small nor too wide, to make sure that it is comfortable for the baby. For the bassinet to be safe, it is important to take into account the following;

The mattress is hard i.e. to support the child so that he/she will not sink in the central part and it also serves to reduce the risk of sudden death.

The foot of the bassinet should be stable, so that it does not fall or rock unnecessarily. If it is with casters, it will facilitate the transfer of the same.

The bassinet can be used until the child grows long enough and has no space to be fit in the bassinet. Usually its use is limited to the third or fourth month. Today, it is advised that babies stay in the parents’ room for longer until 4 or 5 months of life. In this way and being close to the mother, it becomes easier for the nursing mother to breastfeed the baby at night and there are studies that found that it is a way to reduce the risk of sudden death syndrome as well. These are recommendations that each family should evaluate. There are parents who cannot sleep for the reason that they are very close to the baby, in which case it is recommended to move the baby to his/her own room before the mentioned time. The bassinet and co sleeper are quite the same and it is recommended to choose the co sleeper.
