Thousands of websites are launched on daily basis, but most of them vanish into oblivion because they don’t attract any visitors. The reasons for that would make a very long list. However, here are some of the most ridiculous mistakes designers and owners make during site building that guarantee disastrous results for their websites.
1 – Lack of Contact Information
If you have business aspirations or you rely on user feedback in any way then you need to put your contact information, from emails to phone numbers to social media platform’ links, in a very visible way so that if someone is scanning for them, they can find it easily. In the business world, it adds legitimacy to your venture and assures people that you are not a scam Website
2 – Dead Links
Many websites have pages that don’t work, as in visitor remains on the same page even after clicking on them or go to a page displaying error 404. Those sites are not successful sites and only get unique visitors and that too very few. Always make sure that you check your website regularly and provide an easy way for visitors to register their complaints about the usability of the website. Also make sure that you have no orphan or dead-end pages i.e. the pages that are on your website but can only be reached from direct URL and don’t have any link on the site, and also pages that are dead and have nothing on them which sometimes don’t even have a connection to your website apparently.
3 – Overabundance of Fonts and Colors
Simplicity is your friend in any kind of designing. Many a time novice professional designers or amateurs who have recently learned their craft, go overboard in their efforts to impress the people they are working for and because of the fact that they have lots of choices available for fonts and colors. Popular sites are the ones not trying to be an art house and using only 2 or 3 fonts and very few colors.
People like stability and cleanliness, a jumbled mess of different fonts and colors will not give that impression. An important part of responsive web design strategy is to also make sure that your layout looks good on all the possible electronic devices like laptops, phones and iPads, etc.
4 – Lack of Social Media Links
With the rise of social media usage in the last 5 years, it has become important for sites to also maintain a social media presence. Social media – of any type – is the platform which is now used to connect every aspect of your online existence. Always provide links to your Facebook and Twitter pages. If you are running a business, then it is infinitely more important to do that. Business failing to do that are missing out on valuable marketing and brand awareness. However, be vary of adding your social media feeds to your websites, it was considered cool when it was new but now your social media pages are one click or tap away so it’s not necessary. Also they can slow down your site experience and as we discussed it is far from ideal.
